Local spin polarisation of electrons in Rashba semiconductor nanowires: effects of the bound state
The local spin polarisation (LSP) of electrons in two typical semiconductor
nanowires under the modulation of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is
investigated theoretically. The influence of both the SOI- and
structure-induced bound states on the LSP is taken into account via the
spin-resolved lattice Green function method. It is discovered that high
spin-density islands with alternative signs of polarisation are formed inside
the nanowires due to the interaction between the bound states and the Rashba
effective magnetic field. Further study shows that the spin-density islands
caused by the structure-induced bound state exhibit a strong robustness against
disorder. These findings may provide an efficient way to create local magnetic
moments and store information in semiconductors.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Cervical Cancer-Associated Human Papillomavirus 16 E7 Oncoprotein Inhibits Induction of Anti-Cancer Immunity by a CD4+ T Cell Dependent Mechanism
Attempts to develop therapeutic vaccines against cervical cancer have been proven difficult. One of the major causes of the failure is due to the use of the wrong mouse models based on transplantable tumours in testing the efficacy of vaccines. Now that a transgenic epithelial mouse model has been developed to closely mimic cervical cancer, the mechanisms needed to eliminate this type of cancer could be studied. The E7 oncoprotein of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most expressed HPV protein in cervical cancers and its continuous production is essential to maintain the cancerous state and therefore the obvious target in the development of vaccines. Skin grafts expressing the HPV 16 E7 protein (E7 autografts) are not spontaneously rejected from an MHC matched immunocompetent host. Interestingly, simultaneous placement of an MHC mismatched skin (allograft) next to an E7 autograft results in the E7 autograft rejection. However when the allograft also expresses E7, the E7 autograft is rejected more slowly. Autograft rejection requires CD8+ T cells, and is accelerated by removal of CD4+ T cells after placement of the E7 expressing allograft, suggesting induction of an E7 specific CD4+ regulatory T cell population by the E7 expressing allograft. This observation may have implications in designing effective vaccines and immunotherapy against cervical cancers in women
Thermalization of quark-gluon matter by 2-to-2 and 3-to-3 elastic scatterings
Thermalization of quark-gluon matter is studied with a transport equation
that includes contributions of 2-to-2 and 3-to-3 elastic scatterings.
Thermalization time is related to the squared amplitudes for the elastic
scatterings that are calculated in perturbative QCD.Comment: LaTex, 6 pages, 3 figures, talk presented at the 19th international

GeV {\gamma}-ray Emission Detected by Fermi-LAT Probably Associated with the Thermal Composite Supernova Remnant Kesteven 41 in a Molecular Environment
Hadron emission from supernova remnant (SNR)-molecular cloud (MC) association
systems has been widely regarded as a probe of the shock-accelerated cosmic-ray
protons. Here, we report on the detection of a {\gamma}-ray emission source,
with a significance of 24{\sigma} in 0.2-300 GeV, projected to lie to the
northwest of the thermal composite SNR Kesteven 41, using 5.6 years of
Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) observation data. No significant long-term
variability in the energy range 0.2--300 GeV is detected around this source.
The 3{\sigma} error circle, 0.09 degree; in radius, covers the 1720MHz OH maser
and is essentially consistent with the location of the V_{LSR} ~-50 km/s MC
with which the SNR interacts. The source emission has an exponential cutoff
power-law spectrum with a photon index of 1.9+/-0.1 and a cutoff energy of
4.0+/-0.9 GeV, and the corresponding 0.2-300 GeV luminosity is ~1.3*10^36 erg/s
at a distance of 12 kpc. There is no radio pulsar in the 3{\sigma} circle
responsible for the high {\gamma}-ray luminosity. While the inverse Compton
scattering scenario would lead to a difficulty in the electron energy budget,
the source emission can naturally be explained by the hadronic interaction
between the relativistic protons accelerated by the shock of SNR Kesteven 41
and the adjacent northwestern MC. In this paper, we present a list of Galactic
thermal composite SNRs detected at GeV {\gamma}-ray energies by Fermi-LAT is

Does Competition Encourage Unethical Behavior? The Case of Corporate Profit Hiding in China
This paper investigates whether market competition enhances firms’ incentives to hide profits. We develop a theoretical model of firms’ profit hiding behavior in competitive environments and derive several testable hypotheses. We then test the model using a database that covers more than 20,000 large-and-medium-sized industrial firms in China during the period 1995-2002. Our findings show that firms in more competitive market environments – as well as firms in relatively disadvantageous positions – hide a larger share of their profits. This suggests that policies intended to promote competition should be accompanied by policies aiming at strengthening institutional infrastructure and at leveling playing fields.preprin
Information filtering based on transferring similarity
In this Brief Report, we propose a new index of user similarity, namely the
transferring similarity, which involves all high-order similarities between
users. Accordingly, we design a modified collaborative filtering algorithm,
which provides remarkably higher accurate predictions than the standard
collaborative filtering. More interestingly, we find that the algorithmic
performance will approach its optimal value when the parameter, contained in
the definition of transferring similarity, gets close to its critical value,
before which the series expansion of transferring similarity is convergent and
after which it is divergent. Our study is complementary to the one reported in
[E. A. Leicht, P. Holme, and M. E. J. Newman, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 73} 026120
(2006)], and is relevant to the missing link prediction problem.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Gutzwiller Projected wavefunctions in the fermonic theory of S=1 spin chains
We study in this paper a series of Gutzwiller Projected wavefunctions for S=1
spin chains obtained from a fermionic mean-field theory for general S>1/2 spin
systems [Phys. Rev. B 81, 224417] applied to the bilinear-biquadratic (J-K)
model. The free-fermion mean field states before the projection are 1D paring
states. By comparing the energies and correlation functions of the projected
pairing states with those obtained from known results, we show that the
optimized Gutzwiller projected wavefunctions are very good trial ground state
wavefunctions for the antiferromagnetic bilinear-biquadratic model in the
regime K0). We find that different topological phases of the
free-fermion paring states correspond to different spin phases: the weak
pairing (topologically non-trivial) state gives rise to the Haldane phase,
whereas the strong pairing (topologically trivial) state gives rise to the
dimer phase. In particular the mapping between the Haldane phase and Gutwziller
wavefunction is exact at the AKLT point K=1/3. The transition point between the
two phases determined by the optimized Gutzwiller Projected wavefunction is in
good agreement with the known result. The effect of Z2 gauge fluctuations above
the mean field theory is analyzed.Comment: 10 pages,7 figure
The Numerical Solution of Scalar Field for Nariai Case in 5D Ricci-flat SdS Black String Space with Polynomial Approximation
As one exact candidate of the higher dimensional black hole, the 5D
Ricci-flat Schwarzschild-de Sitter black string space presents something
interesting. In this paper, we give a numerical solution to the real scalar
field around the Nariai black hole by the polynomial approximation. Unlike the
previous tangent approximation, this fitting function makes a perfect match in
the leading intermediate region and gives a good description near both the
event and the cosmological horizons. We can read from our results that the wave
is close to a harmonic one with the tortoise coordinate. Furthermore, with the
actual radial coordinate the waves pile up almost equally near the both
horizons.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
